Influenza incidence, lineages, and vaccine effectiveness estimates in Lima, Peru, 2023
    (Elsevier Ltd, 2024-04-01)
Characterisation of influenza viruses in the southern hemisphere can guide local response and provide insights to northern hemisphere jurisdictions about their upcoming influenza season.1,2 Here, we present the information on 2023 end of influenza season in the southern hemisphere about influenza lineages, incidence of medically attended, laboratory-confirmed influenza cases, and influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) against the antigen from surveillance clinics and a hospital in San Juan de Lurigancho and San Martin de Porres, the two most populated districts of Peru.

Interim Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Estimates During the 2023 Southern Hemisphere Season
    (2023-09-08)
Our findings suggest that a substantial number of people sought care for CLI during an early Southern Hemisphere season during which A/H1N1pdm09 clade 6B.1A.5a.2a viruses predominated. The minority vaccinated benefitted from the A/Victoria/2570/2019 (H1N1)pdm09-like antigen which afforded good protection against illness.

Human T Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 and Human T Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 2 Mortality in the Shipibo-Konibo People
(American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2025-01-01)
High rates of human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and human T cell lymphotropic virus type 2 (HTLV-2) infections have been reported among Andean and Amazonian Peruvian indigenous populations in Peru. The Shipibo-Konibo people are the third-largest Amazonian indigenous group living in Peru. By using data from two observational studies conducted in the Shipibo-Konibo community, we estimated that the risk of all-cause death at 12 years was 3.11 times higher (95% CI: 1.58-6.10) for people with HTLV-1 infection compared with those with HTLV-2 infection or without HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 infections.
