Departamento de Economía, 1998)This essay pretends to show, on the one hand, that the gains of competition are concentrated only on industrial branches with statistically significant increasing returns to scale and, on the other hand, that the significance of intra-industrial trade has been reduced during the last years. The empirical test is done by the use of a model which permits identify the kind of returns to scale existent in each of the 32 industrial branches of the manufacturing sector. Moreover, the econometrics estimation of the model makes it possible to test the importance of the demand factors to explain the trend and the dynamics of growth and capital accumulation in the manufacturing sector. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Departamento de Economía, 1998)This paper is concerned with competition in the peruvian manufacturing industry. A simple model of competition is estimated in order to evaluate the influence of productivity changes and relative labor costs. With this purpose an index of competition was constructed for 32 industrial branches, with export and import data, following the revealed comparative advantages methodology. The period of analysis goes from 1985 to 1995. The labor costs are measured in current dollars. Hence, the exchange rate effects on the competitiveness of the industrial branches are taken into account by the labor cost variable. The model also includes an index of capacity utilization in order to estimate the net effects of productivity and labor cost on the industrial competitiveness. One of the most striking results of this research is that only 8 industrial branches out of 32 considered, won competitiveness during 1985-1995. The trade liberalization and the exchange rate overvaluation are the main responsible for the massive lost of industrial competitiveness during 1991-1995. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Departamento de Economía, 1998)This essay is concerned with the performance of Peruvian manufacturing industry and manufacturing trade, during the 1950-1996 period. This period comprehends the years of import substitution industrialization, the long economic stagnation of 1976-1990, and the recent years of trade liberalization and economic deregulation. The nature of import substitution is evaluated and, at the same time, an explanation of its limits and declination is tried in order to understand the long economic stagnation of 1976-1990. Finally, this essay puts special emphasis on the differences of the manufacturing industry performance during the context of trade liberalization, and the boom and declination of import substitution. The effects of liberal reforms on the manufacturing trade and on the competitiveness of Peruvian industry are analyzed with particular attention, both from the demand and input cost sides. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Ciclos peruanos, andinos y de Estados Unidos(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Departamento de Economía, 1998)In this article we have shown that between 1950 and the debt crisis economic fluctuations of Andean countries and of the U. S. A. are positively correlated. The exceptions to the rule are the oil exporting Venezuela and Ecuador during some of the subperiods selected. In general, the correlation are significant before the debt crisis in 1982 but most of them become non-significant during the 1981-1995 period. The same pattern applies to the correlation between Peru and U. S. A. for 1929-1981 and 1981-1995. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Employment and deadweight loss effects of observed non-wage labor costs(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Departamento de Economía, 2007)To assess the employment effects of labor costs it is crucial to have reliable estimates of the labor cost elasticity of labor demand. Using a matched firm-worker dataset, we estimate a long run unconditional labor demand function, exploiting information on workers to correct for endogeneity in the determination of wages. We evaluate the employment and deadweight loss effects of observed employers’ contributions imposed by labor laws (health insurance, training, and taxes) as well as of observed workers’ deductions (social security and income tax). We find that non-wage labor costs reduce employment by 17% for white-collars and by 53% for blue-collars, with associated deadweight losses of 10% and 35% of total contributions, respectively. Since most firms undercomply with mandated employers’ and workers contributions, we find that full compliance would imply employment losses of 4% for white-collars and 12% for blue-collars, with respective associated deadweight losses of 2% and 6%. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
The objective of this study is to analyze the evolution and determinants of market power in the regulated microfinance sector in Peru. The Lerner index is estimated as a measure of market power, in a conventional way and adjusted for efficiency, with information from a wide panel of microfinance institutions (MFIs) covering the period January 2003 – June 2016. We find that, the average efficiency-adjusted Lerner index is approximately twice the conventional Lerner index, which confirms that not taking into account the inefficiency with which the MFIs operate leads to an underestimation of their power of the market. Both indices follow a downward trend until 2014, indicating that market power in the regulated sector of Peruvian microfinance declined significantly for more than a decade. From 2015 until the end of the period under analysis, this downward trend is reversed, with a significant growth in the market power of Peruvian MFIs. On the determinants of market power, it is found that entities with greater cost efficiency have greater market power; there is a non-linear relationship between the size of microfinance institutions and their market power, with the smaller entities and the largest ones enjoying the greatest market power. The expansive cycle of economic activity generates greater market power in the sector; while, the more elastic is the total demand for microcredit in the economy, the lower the market power of the MFIs. In addition, market concentration raises the market power of MFIs when the effect of inefficiency is taken into account in their measurement. Efficiency in profits increases the market power of MFIs and delinquency reduces it, in both cases, when measured in a conventional manner. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Departamento de Economía, 2000)The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate empirically the economic relation between Lima and some departments of the country by estimating the effect of shocks affecting Lima’s growth over the rates of growth of the remaining departments. We do not pretend to describe the mechanisms of transmission but to identificate the negative and positive effects of shocks coming from Lima, considered “the center,” over the rest of departments, considered “the periphery”. It will be used the Autorregresive Vector Model in its Moving Average representation (VMA), in which the endogenous variables are Lima’s rate of growth, the rate of growth and the rate of inflation of a periphery department. It is assumed that these variables are affected by shocks of demand and supply originated in the center and the periphery. In order to ortogonalize the estimated error variance-covariance matrix we will use the Blanchard and Quah decomposition, in which innovations or aggregate demand shocks have no effect over the product on the long run.
