Item type:Publication, Measurement of anti-3He nuclei absorption in matter and impact on their propagation in the Galaxy(Nature Portfolio, 2022-12-12)In our Galaxy, light antinuclei composed of antiprotons and antineutrons can be produced through high-energy cosmic-ray collisions with the interstellar medium or could also originate from the annihilation of dark-matter particles that have not yet been discovered. On Earth, the only way to produce and study antinuclei with high precision is to create them at high-energy particle accelerators. Although the properties of elementary antiparticles have been studied in detail, the knowledge of the interaction of light antinuclei with matter is limited. We determine the disappearance probability of $${}^{3}\overline{{{{\rm{He}}}}}$$ 3 He ¯ when it encounters matter particles and annihilates or disintegrates within the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. We extract the inelastic interaction cross section, which is then used as an input to the calculations of the transparency of our Galaxy to the propagation of $${}^{3}\overline{{{{\rm{He}}}}}$$ 3 He ¯ stemming from dark-matter annihilation and cosmic-ray interactions within the interstellar medium. For a specific dark-matter profile, we estimate a transparency of about 50%, whereas it varies with increasing $${}^{3}\overline{{{{\rm{He}}}}}$$ 3 He ¯ momentum from 25% to 90% for cosmic-ray sources. The results indicate that $${}^{3}\overline{{{{\rm{He}}}}}$$ 3 He ¯ nuclei can travel long distances in the Galaxy, and can be used to study cosmic-ray interactions and dark-matter annihilation.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, ALICE luminosity determination for Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(Institute of Physics, 2024-02-01)Luminosity determination within the ALICE experiment is based on the measurement, in van der Meer scans, of the cross sections for visible processes involving one or more detectors (visible cross sections). In 2015 and 2018, the Large Hadron Collider provided Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of √s NN= 5.02 TeV. Two visible cross sections, associated with particle detection in the Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) and in the V0 detector, were measured in a van der Meer scan. This article describes the experimental set-up and the analysis procedure, and presents the measurement results. The analysis involves a comprehensive study of beam-related effects and an improved fitting procedure, compared to previous ALICE studies, for the extraction of the visible cross section. The resulting uncertainty of both the ZDC-based and the V0-based luminosity measurement for the full sample is 2.5%. The inelastic cross section for hadronic interactions in Pb-Pb collisions at √s NN= 5.02 TeV, obtained by efficiency correction of the V0-based visible cross section, was measured to be 7.67 ± 0.25 b, in agreement with predictions using the Glauber model.4 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Systematic study of flow vector fluctuations in √sNN = 5.02 TeV Pb–Pb collisions(American Physical Society, 2024-06-01)Measurements of the pT-dependent flow vector fluctuations in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV using azimuthal correlations with the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. A four-particle correlation approach [ALICE Collaboration, Phys. Rev. C 107, L051901 (2023)2469-998510.1103/PhysRevC.107.L051901] is used to quantify the effects of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations separately. This paper extends previous studies to additional centrality intervals and provides measurements of the pT-dependent flow vector fluctuations at sNN=5.02TeV with two-particle correlations. Significant pT-dependent fluctuations of the V - 2 flow vector in Pb-Pb collisions are found across different centrality ranges, with the largest fluctuations of up to ∼15% being present in the 5% most central collisions. In parallel, no evidence of significant pT-dependent fluctuations of V - 3 or V - 4 is found. Additionally, evidence of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations is observed with more than 5σ significance in central collisions. These observations in Pb-Pb collisions indicate where the classical picture of hydrodynamic modeling with a common symmetry plane breaks down. This has implications for hard probes at high pT, which might be biased by pT-dependent flow angle fluctuations of at least 23% in central collisions. Given the presented results, existing theoretical models should be reexamined to improve our understanding of initial conditions, quark-gluon plasma properties, and the dynamic evolution of the created system. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Measurement of ωc0 baryon production and branching-fraction ratio BR(ωc0 → ω−e+νe)/BR(ωc0 → ω−π+) in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV(American Physical Society, 2024-08-01)The inclusive production of the charm-strange baryon ωc0 is measured for the first time via its semileptonic decay into ω-e+νe at midrapidity (|y|<0.8) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the center-of-mass energy s=13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The transverse momentum (pT) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 2<pT<12 GeV/c. The branching-fraction ratio BR(ωc0→ω-e+νe)/BR(ωc0→ω-π+) is measured to be 1.12±0.22 (stat) ±0.27 (syst). Comparisons with other experimental measurements, as well as with theoretical calculations, are presented. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Measurements of jet quenching using semi-inclusive hadron+jet distributions in pp and central Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(American Physical Society, 2024-07-01)The ALICE Collaboration reports measurements of the semi-inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high pT) charged hadron, in pp and central Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN=5.02 TeV. The large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions is corrected using a data-driven statistical approach which enables precise measurement of recoil jet distributions over a broad range in pT,chjet and jet resolution parameter R. Recoil jet yields are reported for R=0.2, 0.4, and 0.5 in the range 7<pT,chjet<140 GeV/c and π/2<Δφ<π, where Δφ is the azimuthal angular separation between hadron trigger and recoil jet. The low-pT,chjet reach of the measurement explores unique phase space for studying jet quenching, the interaction of jets with the quark-gluon plasma generated in high-energy nuclear collisions. Comparison of pT,chjet distributions from pp and central Pb-Pb collisions probes medium-induced jet energy loss and intra-jet broadening, while comparison of their acoplanarity distributions explores in-medium jet scattering and medium response. The measurements are compared to theoretical calculations incorporating jet quenching. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Exploring the strong interaction of three-body systems at the LHC(American Physical Society, 2024-07-01)Deuterons are atomic nuclei composed of a neutron and a proton held together by the strong interaction. Unbound ensembles composed of a deuteron and a third nucleon have been investigated in the past using scattering experiments, and they constitute a fundamental reference in nuclear physics to constrain nuclear interactions and the properties of nuclei. In this work, K+-d and p-d femtoscopic correlations measured by the ALICE Collaboration in proton-proton (pp) collisions at √s ¼ 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider ffiffi (LHC) are presented. It is demonstrated that correlations in momentum space between deuterons and kaons or protons allow us to study three-hadron systems at distances comparable with the proton radius. The analysis of the K+-d correlation shows that the relative distances at which deuterons and protons or kaons are produced are around 2 fm. The analysis of the p-d correlation shows that only a full three-body calculation that accounts for the internal structure of the deuteron can explain the data. In particular, the sensitivity of the observable to the short-range part of the interaction is demonstrated. These results indicate that correlations involving light nuclei in pp collisions at the LHC will also provide access to any three-body system in the strange and charm sectors. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Studying the interaction between charm and light-flavor mesons(American Physical Society, 2024-08-01)The two-particle momentum correlation functions between charm mesons (D∗± and D±) and charged light-flavor mesons (π± and K±) in all charge combinations are measured for the first time by the ALICE Collaboration in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV. For DK and D∗K pairs, the experimental results are in agreement with theoretical predictions of the residual strong interaction based on quantum chromodynamics calculations on the lattice and chiral effective field theory. In the case of Dπ and D∗π pairs, tension between the calculations including strong interactions and the measurement is observed. For all particle pairs, the data can be adequately described by Coulomb interaction only, indicating a shallow interaction between charm and light-flavor mesons. Finally, the scattering lengths governing the residual strong interaction of the Dπ and D∗π systems are determined by fitting the experimental correlation functions with a model that employs a Gaussian potential. The extracted values are small and compatible with zero. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Measurements of chemical potentials in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(American Physical Society, 2024-08-30)This Letter presents the most precise measurement to date of the matter-antimatter imbalance at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=5.02 TeV. Using the Statistical Hadronization framework, it is possible to obtain the value of the electric charge and baryon chemical potentials, μQ=-0.18±0.90 MeV and μB=0.71±0.45 MeV, with unprecedented precision. A centrality-differential study of the antiparticle-to-particle yield ratios of charged pions, protons, ω baryons, and light (hyper)nuclei is performed. These results indicate that the system created in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC is on average baryon-free and electrically neutral at midrapidity.2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Investigating strangeness enhancement in jet and medium via 𝜙(1020) production in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(American Physical Society, 2024-12-01)This work aims to differentiate strangeness produced from hard processes (jetlike) and softer processes (underlying event) by measuring the angular correlation between a high-momentum trigger hadron ((Formula presented)) acting as a jet proxy and a produced strange hadron [(Formula presented) meson]. Measuring (Formula presented) correlations at midrapidity in (Formula presented)-Pb collisions at (Formula presented) as a function of event multiplicity provides insight into the microscopic origin of strangeness enhancement in small collision systems. The jetlike and the underlying-event-like strangeness production are investigated as a function of event multiplicity. They are also compared between a lower and higher momentum region. The evolutions of the per-trigger yields within the near-side (aligned with the trigger hadron) and away-side (in the opposite direction of the trigger hadron) jets are studied separately, allowing for the characterization of two distinct jetlike production regimes. Furthermore, the (Formula presented) correlations within the underlying event give access to a production regime dominated by soft production processes, which can be compared directly to the in-jet production. Comparisons between (Formula presented) and dihadron correlations show that the observed strangeness enhancement is largely driven by the underlying event, where the (Formula presented) ratio is significantly larger than within the jet regions. As multiplicity increases, the fraction of the total (Formula presented) yield coming from jets decreases compared to the underlying event production, leading to high-multiplicity events being dominated by the increased strangeness production from the underlying event.
