The challenges of wastewater reuse in Peru

Parsimonious cumulative process-based workflow for early sanitation infrastructure evaluation (CPESI): Case study of Riohacha, Colombia
    (Elsevier Ltd, 2024-09-01)
In small and medium-sized cities from developing countries, the early selection of integrated wastewater management systems is challenging due to the lack or limitations in the availability of basic information and skilled professionals. This study presents CPESI, a cumulative processes-based parsimonious workflow for early evaluation of sanitary infrastructure. CPESI is aimed to provide a simple, objective, and systematic analysis framework at the early stages of development of sanitary systems in underdeveloped nations. CPESI was applied to evaluate sanitation system alternatives for Riohacha (Colombia) in three stages, namely, (1) an initial assessment of citizens acceptability of the alternatives and analysis of basic laboratory testing; (2) a process analysis and technical-economic evaluation of alternatives based on CAPEX and OPEX indicators; and (3) engineering judgment to select the most viable alternative through multi-criteria evaluation. Our results suggest that CPESI could be highly replicable in developing countries and that it has the potential to expedite the alternatives assessment process when compared to data-intensive methods and expert requirements. Several researchers have highlighted the need to develop tools suitable to evaluate SDG 6 in developing nations. We believe that CPESI has the potential to contribute to that end.

    (2023-07-26)
The physicochemical monitoring and evaluation of wastewater in the critical drainage areas corresponding to the Puente Piedra WWTP, Lima, was carried out. For this purpose, the geographical position, the number of Non-Domestic Users (NDUs) and the identification of NDUs with high wastewater discharges were considered. In the critical areas, wastewater monitoring points were established, corresponding to sewage inlets, where quality was evaluated through compliance with the Maximum Allowable Values (MAV) of D.S. 021-2009- VIVIENDA. The monitoring plan covered a control period of 8 hours with spot monitoring carried out every 2 hours. At monitoring points BZ-70651 and BZ-59124, excess AMVs were found for pH (>14), BOD5, COD, TSS, oils and grease due to the presence of textile and paper manufacturing industries; at point BZ-212339 there was an excess of BOD5, COD, TSS, oils and grease, and sedimentable solids as a result of organic material released by businesses, restaurants and domestic users; at point BZ-46847 there was no excess of AMVs; and at point BZ-212344 BOD5 was exceeded due to discharges from businesses, domestic users and industries. It is recommended to extend the application of the regulations, considering the biological analysis parameters, improve UND control in the drainage area, establish continuous monitoring stations and replicate the described procedure to other areas.

Efficiency of Microorganisms in the Stabilization of Septic Sludge in the Huando District, 2021
(Instituto de Altos Estudios de Salud Publica, 2023-03-01)
The unprecedented growth of urban populations has placed enormous pressure on the quality of life with regard to housing, water and energy supply, and this is reflected in the deterioration of the quality of water, air and soil. A decrease in environmental quality due to the generation of waste in these urban centers, especially wastewater, is an important and growing concern. For this, improvement processes for these effluents have been proposed and one of them is the use of efficient microorganisms (EM), in the understanding that bacterial metabolism determines the effectiveness of biological treatment of wastewater. A protocol was designed with five treatments with three repetitions, a control or T0 without ME concentration, T1 2.5% ME in the V/V ratio (volume of solute and volume of solvent).; T2 5%; T3 7.5% and T4 10% to determine the effect of these bacteria in septic sludge in the Huando 2021 district. The organoleptic color and odor characteristics were substantially favored with the presence of ME. Likewise, the concentrations of dissolved solids, ammonium, biochemical oxygen demand; and very in particular, a considerable reduction of the colony-forming units of fecal coliforms. These systems are an alternative for wastewater treatment, they are economical, easy to install, operate and maintain, and are widely used to meet residential demands.
