Item type:Publication, Navigating resettlement in the Peruvian Amazon: Gender inequalities in Nueva Ciudad de Belén(Universidad Nacional de Colombia::will be referenced::ROR-ID, 2024-01-01)This article aims to demonstrate, from a gender and intersectionality perspective, how population resettlement as an urban policy in disaster risk management contexts generates inequalities for a specific group of women. The case of the population resettlement of the New City of Belén, a project executed in urban areas of the Peruvian Amazon, was investigated using a qualitative approach based on interviews and participant observation. The results showed that, within the framework of the urbanization process of the city of Iquitos, characterized by the presence of external actors, the planning of resettlement did not consider the local particularities of the territory and reinforced gender stereotypes regarding the use of space between men and women. This resulted in changes in the routines of resettled individuals, particularly women, who are primarily responsible for caregiving tasks. Finally, it highlights how gender, along with other demographic and socioeconomic dimensions, structures urban resettlement policy, generating unequal experiences within a similarly vulnerable group facing the State. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Preparing Cities for Future Pandemics: Unraveling the Influence of Urban and Housing Variables on COVID-19 Incidence in Santiago de Chile(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2023-08-01)In this study, we analyzed how urban, housing, and socioeconomic variables are related to COVID-19 incidence. As such, we have analyzed these variables along with demographic, education, employment, and COVID-19 data from 32 communes in Santiago de Chile between March and August of 2020, before the release of the vaccines. The results of our Principal Component Analysis (PCA) confirmed that those communes with more economic, social, organizational, and infrastructural resources were overall less affected by COVID-19. As the dimensions affecting COVID-19 are based on structural variables, this study discusses to what extent our cities can be prepared for the next pandemic. Recommendations for local decision-makers in controlling illegal immigration and investing in housing and urban parks are drawn. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Understanding Urban Resilience and SDGs: A New Approach in Decision-Making for Sustainable Cities(John Wiley and Sons, 2025)Recent crises exacerbate social, environmental, and economic problems affecting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and urban resilience. Urgent action is needed to address these issues. The paper aims to (i) broaden the debate on urban resilience and the SDGs and (ii) examine how the interconnection of Urban Spatial Resilience (USR) and the SDGs can contribute to sustainable cities and communities. The research is developed through a literature review and a bibliometric analysis, followed by a quantitative approach using modeling and simulation. The results reveal three critical elements that can impact urban resilience and sustainable development: SDG11, urban spatial structure resilience, and urban spatial form resilience. Other findings indicate that SDG13 and SDG6 have a significant indirect relationship with urban resilience. The study provides policy implications supporting urban resilience and the SDGs.2
