Item type:Publication, Terrorism and the loss of cultural heritage: the case of ISIS in Iraq and Syria(Springer Singapore, 2021-01-01)Since 2014, ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Sham) has committed many terrorist crimes, which is considered serious international crimes such as crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes; they claimed the lives of thousands of civilians and military personnel, demolished places of worship and destroyed antiquities and historical sites in the areas that controlled. Indeed, Iraq and Syria were the most affected countries. In this chapter, a definition of the legal status of the territorial power IS (Islamic state) under International Law will be presented, especially that IS declared itself a state without the recognition of other states and it dissociated itself from the body of international law. Along with a brief review of the tangible cultural heritage loss, the ideology of ISIS behind this systematic destruction of historical sites and objects will be clarified. Moreover, the research will put light on the international actions applied by other states to limit such cultural crimes. Based on the previous definitions and the achieved experiences and results, the chapter will be ended by proposing a mechanism of transitional justice to avoid future rising feelings of revenge, which may lead to new crimes that destroy societies and cultural heritage. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Nos habíamos terruqueado tanto: cómo y por qué el poder instrumentaliza el concepto “terrorismo”(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2024-12-10)This paper examines the discursive appropriation of the concept of “terrorism” by the contemporary establishment. Drawing some indications from the political philosophies of Plato and Hobbes, who share a similar enthusiasm for violence as an instrument of power, the argument is made that the misuse of the concept of “terrorism” functions as a mechanism for the self-legitimation and self-affirmation of power. This is the case because power, through widely disseminated doctrinal systems, presents terrorist acts as a sample of the hypothetical state of total chaos that would arise if its current configuration were modified. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Limits in the Media: The Representation of the Tri-Border Area in the Newspapers Folha de S.Paulo and O Globo (2011-2019)(Universidade Estadual de Campinas UNICAMP, 2023-01-01)The Tri-Border Area between Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay is often seen as a lawless region, which ignores its character as a center of energy resources, commerce, and tourism. The focus of this article is to identify the representations about the region in Brazil’s two most widely read newspapers, the Folha de S.Paulo and O Globo, and if they reinforce these images. To do so, the concepts of framing and agenda-setting are used. A qualitative analysis was complemented by the use of NVivo software to detect the words most frequently associated with the region. The results indicate a predominance of issues related to illegalities in the press coverage, especially terrorism. Of the total texts about the Tri-Border Area published between 2011 and 2019, 55.5% in O Globo and 47% in Folha contained references to illegalities. The root terror-was present, respectively, in 39% and 40% of the texts. We conclude that the press coverage of the region does not follow specific events (event-driven). Members of security forces are the preeminent sources of reports, and the absence of dissonant voices tends to reinforce the region’s image of insecurity and the need for solutions that involve support border surveillance and control solutions.
