Challenges for university teachers in the design of virtual educational experiences during the pandemic

The perception of educators on gender equality: A study in Ecuador
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-06-01)
Gender equality is a prerequisite for people-centered human development. This exploratory and descriptive study was conducted to investigate the perception of gender among Ecuadorian primary school teachers. Quantitative data were obtained from teachers in public and urban educational establishments. In order to collect the data, an online survey-type opinion questionnaire was applied with the aim of finding out teachers’ perception of gender equality within their institutions in educational establishments in the Republic of Ecuador, considering the dimensions of personal perceptions of the subject, the organizational culture, and the implementation of gender equality in the internal management of the educational organizations where they work. The results of the questionnaire show that teachers perceive that there is currently more receptiveness to gender issues than in the past. From the answers received, it can be concluded that people identify with gender issues, even though there is a need for elements and support to enable them to be expressed effectively, on a daily basis and sustained over time.

The institutional marks in the functioning of support networks: The case of Peruvian teachers in times of pandemic
(Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, Departamento de Antropologia Social y Cultural, 2024-01-01)
Teachers are a key building-block of the educational process. In a limit situation that disrupted everyday life, such as that of the COVID-19 pandemic, how were teachers’ personal support networks put into motion to respond to their emerging work-related (teaching) and personal needs? What was the role of the institutional and organizational contexts in this process? This study seeks to answer these questions based on empirical data from Peruvian secondary education teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The methodological design was mixed in nature (sociometric and qualitative). Several social support mobilization processes were found. In particular, we highlight the occurrence of mixed mobilization processes. Likewise, institutional (family) and organizational (educational institutions) contexts conditioned these processes in different ways. Teachers recreated organizational routines that had already existed before the pandemic, but also developed new support practices. Some of these practices tended to become routinized, but others were resisted, due to their unintended negative consequences on teachers’ lives. These results add new analytical elements to existing theories on social support mobilization processes.

Support networks and organizational context: Peruvian teachers in times of pandemic
(Colegio de Mexico, A.C., Departamento de Publicaciones, 2024-01-01)
As a result of the pandemic, educational systems in Latin America began to operate remotely through the internet. New needs arose that had to be met to guarantee the continuity of classes. In this context, marked by great uncertainty, this article investigates the role of the personal networks of Peruvian teachers, as potential sources of support. Likewise, the mediation of the educational organizational context in the functioning of these networks is analyzed. The methodological design was mixed in nature. Results suggest the presence of multidimensional support that went far beyond work-related matters. The organizational context favored mutual support practices, but also had unintended negative effects on teachers’ personal lives.

    Teaching Around the Globe
    (Oxford University Press, 2023-07-18)
Teaching is global, so the purpose of this chapter is to provide an international perspective on classroom instruction. In the first part, the authors summarize findings from two international investigations (conducted by others). The first is a video observational study involving eight nations reporting their typical teaching practices in terms of classroom management, social-emotional support, and quality of instruction. The second is a survey-based study involving 19 nations in which teachers self-reported their job satisfaction and teaching efficacy. In the second part, the authors invite educators from 19 different countries to participate in a virtual roundtable discussion to communicate what is special about teaching in their particular nation. Each educator answered this question: What can the rest of the world learn from what teachers in your nation do so well? The roundtable participants highlight their teachers’ work ethic, engagement in professional learning communities, commitment to inclusion and democratic education, and opportunities for both autonomy and collaboration.

Education as Flourishing: Self-Determination Theory in Schools as They Are and as They Might Be
    (Oxford University Press, 2023-01-01)
In the perspective of self-determination theory the central aim of education should be that of enhancing students’ flourishing. Flourishing involves not only the development of cognitive capacities but also capacities for agency, prosocial relationships, and psychological wellness. Strong evidence within self-determination theory, reviewed herein, shows how teaching styles that support students’ basic needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence foster these aspects of flourishing, enhancing the quality of students’ engagement, learning, and social relationships. Also highlighted are how students’ motivation and agency reciprocally influence teachers’ tendency to be need supportive, such that interventions on both sides of the teacher-student relationship can enhance learning climates. Nonetheless, this body of evidence concerns optimizing need supports within existing school environments, which too often remain mired in policies, practices, and omnipresent evaluations that are not designed for student flourishing, and which instead often harm both students’ and teachers’ well-being and motivation. The chapter’s conclusion includes a call to broaden the criteria by which schools are evaluated to include process as well as outcome targets. Creating the best schools we can imagine entails the assessment and cultivation of what really matters (i.e., process targets) to student flourishing in both their present and future lives.

Being Present: A Longitudinal Study on the Role of Mindfulness on Engagement and Burnout in Teachers
    (Emerald Publishing, 2023-10-19)
The purpose of this two-wave longitudinal study was to examine the role of mindfulness as mediator between social support and engagement and as a moderator in the relationship between work overload and burnout, both cross-sectionally and after one year. Design/methodology/approach: The sample consisted of 243 Peruvian teachers. Structural equation modeling and SPSS Process Macro were used to test the hypothesis. Findings: The results show that mindfulness mediated the relationship between social support and engagement at both times but doesn't moderate the relationship between work overload and burnout at either time. Originality/value: This study highlights the role of mindfulness as a valuable personal resource in the workplace, as it facilitates a higher functioning at work while identifying relevant organizational characteristics that have an influence in its use.

An Autonomy-Supportive Teaching Intervention Benefits Students in a Low-SES School Setting
    (Taylor & Francis, 2025-01-01)
We conducted the first autonomy-supportive teaching intervention in a low SES school setting. We hypothesized that the teacher-focused intervention would increase students' psychological need satisfaction and classroom engagement—just as it has been demonstrated to do in previous interventions conducted in more advantaged schools. We randomly assigned 28 Peruvian teachers who taught 14 different subjects (e.g., math) in grades 7–11 in a very low SES school district to participate or not in the autonomy-supportive teaching workshop (i.e., experimental vs. control condition). Their 672 students (332 females, 339 males) self-reported their perceived teacher support, need satisfaction (autonomy, competence, relatedness), and classroom engagement at the beginning, middle, and end of a semester. A structural equation modeling analysis showed that the hypothesized model fit the data well, and that experimental condition predicted students' T2 need satisfaction, T2 need satisfaction predicted students' T3 classroom engagement, and T2 need satisfaction mediated the effect that experimental condition had on T3 classroom engagement. These findings show that an autonomy-supportive teaching intervention can work in a low-SES setting and not just in socioeconomically advantaged schools.
