Trouble at the border: migration policy challenges in Peru from a disability perspective

Chapter 10: Feminisms in Peru in a Context of Crisis
    (Springer Nature Brazil, 2023-01-01)
In 2016, numerous women’s collectives emerged in Peru as marches against violence were taking place around the world. They represented a new feminism with characteristics different from that of the previous century, with which it has continued to coexist. Since 2016, a political crisis also brewed in Peru, with the 2021 election bringing to a close the cycle of post-2001 neoliberal democratic governments, which supported women’s demands with public policies and improved services. The 2021 election gave voters a polarised choice between authoritarian right-wing conservatism and left-wing conservatism. Most feminist groups have sided with the left, as it brought hopes of redress for the historically excluded populations of the Andes and the Amazon regions. Feminism, however, came to be perceived as an ideological option for middle-class women in urban, capitalist areas embedded in a Western modernity that is far from the reality of poverty and discrimination of the indigenous and peasant areas of the Andes. The racial factor thus displaced gender as a priority upheld by liberal governments. This further deepened following the December 2022 social outburst in the Andean south in response to the fall of the elected government and the rise of authoritarian neoliberalism.

Persistent inequalities in adolescent motherhood in Peru (1981–2017): From wide approaches to intercategorical mapping
    (Elsevier BV, 2026-06-01)
Adolescent motherhood in Peru has declined over the past four decades; however, pronounced socioeconomic disparities persist. Drawing on microdata from the 1981, 1993, 2007, and 2017 population censuses-which contain sample sizes more than two orders of magnitude larger than those of Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS)-this study examines the long-run evolution of inequalities in adolescent motherhood. We employ relative risk measures, concentration indices, and their decompositions. We also apply a descriptive intercategorical approach that identifies small, multiply disadvantaged groups, a methodology feasible only with large amounts of data, such as census microdata. National prevalence decreased from 15.4% in 1993 to 11.5% in 2017; nonetheless, the risk ratio between adolescents in the poorest and richest wealth quintiles remained strikingly high. The concentration index (CI) declined between 1981 and 2007; however, this trend reversed after 2007. Decomposition analysis shows that between 1981 and 2007, the main factor statistically contributing to inequality was education level, accounting for approximately one-third of the total CI. Finally, the intercategorical mapping reveals that in 2017, three groups jointly defined by wealth, education, ethnicity, region, and rurality continued to face adolescent motherhood rates of 43%, levels that have remained virtually unchanged since 1993.

Disciplinary and Methodological Pluralism in Loneliness Studies
    (Springer Nature, 2025-01-01)
Scientists may benefit from implementing interdisciplinary and multi-method approaches when studying loneliness. Loneliness is a complex phenomenon that is influenced by biological, psychological, social, cultural, and political factors. In addition, it also reflects and impacts personal and local experiences as well as broader social forces, thus being both universal and contextual at the same time. For these reasons, no single disciplinary lens or methodological approach can capture its full scope. It is important to recognize and appreciate that different academic fields and a very wide range of methodological strategies are involved in the study of loneliness, each with its own range of vantage points and advantages. Mapping out such disciplinary and methodological heterogeneity in this chapter supports a case for epistemic pluralism when studying loneliness, in terms of its multilevel and multidomain aspects, complex intersectionality, dual cognitive and embodied dimensions, and its temporal, nonstatic nature. Ultimately, the study of loneliness is an ideal case for advancing and benefiting from a reflexive and pluralist research approach.
