Business innovation and critical success factors in the era of digital transformation and turbulent times
(Cognitione Foundation for the Dissemination of Knowledge and Science, 2021-01-01)
Explore what entrepreneurship and success factors can help drive business to resilience and stability and achieve competitive advantage through innovation in different countries and business realities in the era of digital transformation and turbulent times. METHODOLOGY: Based on the narrative literature review, we present research findings concerning new strategies and outlooks for business innovation in times of many unknowns. Each organization wants to find its way to gain success and create its unique business model, which can capture value creation and innovativeness and be more adaptive, resilient, and stable in critical moments and sustainable over time. FINDINGS: The articles presented in this issue explore the essential factors of business innovation and success in different organizations and the environments in which these businesses function. IMPLICATIONS FOR THEORY AND PRACTICE: This article synthesizes the presented research field’s importance and relevance, connecting its theoretical background with practical research. Recommendations and implications for future trends of this research stream might also be helpful for professionals and academicians. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: The novel studies presented in this issue were done in five different (developing and developed) countries and business sectors that present human-based and non-human-based factors as crucial factors needed to empower business transformation in a complex world. Each group of elements is essential in business success, and their components are interdependent. We need to look at the interactions and interdependencies of their components in a dynamic and network form and cannot simplify the reality, focusing only on one group of business components and ignoring the other. These unique studies provide a valuable outlook to establish dynamic, adaptive business pathways towards a sustainable and resilient organizational future and propose future research paths needed to execute structural changes in businesses.

FinTech Adoption and Bank Credit Risk: Evidence of a Nonlinear Relationship from Latin America
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Departamento de Economía, 2026-08)
We examine how FinTech adoption affects credit risk in a panel of commercial banks from Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru over 2010–2024, covering more than 90 percent of bank lending in each country. Because structured technology-expenditure data do not exist for these banking systems, we construct cumulative dictionary-based digitalization indices from a raw corpus of 785 annual-report PDFs across six technological dimensions. Panel estimates with Driscoll–Kraay inference document an inverted-U relationship between cumulative digitalization and nonperforming loans: early adoption raises NPLs as lending expands towards borrowers without credit histories, while beyond a threshold efficiency gains in screening dominate and credit risk declines. The pattern is specific to the IT-infrastructure dimension of adoption; it survives various robustness exercises. A Cournot framework with two borrower segments organises the opposing inclusion and efficiency channels that motivate the quadratic specification. The turning point falls with bank size, and slopes differ across countries, so the pooled estimates are averages over heterogeneous national markets. With 82% of observations below the threshold, these banking systems remain largely in the phase where digital adoption is associated with rising credit risk.

Longitudinal Scientific Mapping of Emerging and Converging Trends Between the Internet of Things and Digital Transformation
    (Emerald Publishing Limited, 2023-08-03)
Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze the technological change under development linked to the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital transformation (DT) from the perspective of a scientific mapping in a context marked by the occurrence of an unexpected event that accelerated this process such as the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and its variants. Design/methodology/approach The study was developed under the longitudinal scientific mapping approach and considered the period 1990–2021 using as a basis the descriptors DT and IoT. The steps followed were identification and selection of keywords; design and application of an algorithm to identify these selected keywords in titles, abstracts and keywords using terms in Web of Science (WoS) to contrast them; and performing a data processing based on the journals in the Journal Citation Report during 2022. The longitudinal study uses scientific mapping to analyze the evolution of the scientific literature that seeks to understand the acceleration in the integration of technology and its impact on the human factor, processes and organizational culture. Findings This study showed that the technologies converging around IoT form the basis of the main DT processes being experienced on a global scale; furthermore, it was shown that the pandemic accelerated the convergence and application of new technologies to support the major changes required for a world with new needs. Finally, China and the USA differ significantly in the production of scientific knowledge with respect to the first eight followers. Originality/value The knowledge gap addressed by this study is to identify the production of scientific knowledge related to IoT and its impact on DT processes at the scale of individuals, organizations and the new way of delivering value to society. This knowledge about researchers, institutions, countries and the derivation is multiple indicators allows improving decision-making at multiple scales on these issues.

The key enablers of SMEs readiness in Industry 4.0: a case of Malaysia
    (Emerald Publishing, 2025-02-19)
Purpose: The study sheds light on the internal enabling factors towards emerging market (EM) small and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs) preparedness for Industry 4.0 (I4.0) using three dimensions: managerial, operational and technological readiness. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses convenience sampling, having online and paper-based surveys and collecting 110 responses from manufacturing Malaysian SMEs. This sample allowed assessing the relationships of the hypothesized variables through the structural model of data analysis. Findings: This study’s findings demonstrate that financial capability and perceived benefits enhance Malaysian SMEs' managerial, operational and technological readiness. Research limitations/implications: Using Malaysia's case, this paper extends the discussion of the key drivers that underline the decision of EM firms to adopt I4.0. Practical implications: This study’s results provide valuable insights for policymakers to improve the digital ecosystem. Also, understanding critical drivers for I4.0 readiness would encourage SMEs in Malaysia to embrace new digital technologies. Originality/value: Although digital transformation towards I4.0 for manufacturing SMEs would be decisive, little is known about how ready these Malaysian firms are to adopt it or the driving factors that motivate them. Meanwhile, inadequate readiness causes a high failure rate in implementing new technology, processes or organizational changes.

STEM enabling digital skills for women microentrepreneurs in Peru
    (Springer Nature, 2026-12-01)
Women-led microenterprises play a central role in local economies, yet many remain excluded from digital and STEM-related opportunities. This study examines how a University Social Responsibility (USR) training program in Peru supports the development of digital skills that enable women micro-entrepreneurs to progress toward STEM pathways. The objectives were to identify current digital practices, barriers and opportunities for adoption, typologies of digital users, and priority actions to strengthen USR–STEM programs. A qualitative design was used based on six focus groups conducted across six regions. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis with a deductive–inductive approach, supported by predefined categories linked to the study objectives and refined through emerging patterns. Findings show increasing use of social networks, management tools, and generative AI, often stimulated by the training received. Barriers include financial constraints, limited time due to care responsibilities, and gaps in technical skills. Opportunities arise from growing confidence, demand for practical and progressive training, and the role of partnerships with universities and local actors. Two adoption profiles emerge: (1) high-adoption users integrating diverse tools for management and innovation, and (2) transitioning users whose basic digital engagement is shaped by structural constraints. The study proposes a cost–time priority matrix and aligns the findings with SDG-tech indicators to guide scalability. The results highlight the need for differentiated training pathways and multisector partnerships to reduce digital gender gaps and advance women's technological inclusion. The findings offer practical guidance for institutions and policymakers designing scalable digital and STEM-oriented programs for women micro-entrepreneurs.

From intuition to knowledge: the scientific consolidation of management consulting
    (2026-04-21)
The of this paper is to examine the evolution of management consulting from an experience-based professional practice to an increasingly consolidated scientific field. By systematically reviewing the academic literature, the study aims to identify the main conceptual foundations, influential authors, thematic trends, and emerging research streams that have shaped the development of management consulting over time. In doing so, the paper seeks to contribute to a clearer understanding of the discipline's intellectual structure and its ongoing process of academic institutionalization. Design/methodology/approach The study adopts a systematic literature review combined with bibliometric analysis. Following the PRISMA guidelines, relevant publications were identified, screened, and selected from the Scopus database. A final sample of 136 articles published between 1980 and 2025 was analyzed using Biblioshiny within the R environment. Descriptive and relational bibliometric techniques were applied to examine publication trends, authorship patterns, sources, geographical distribution, and thematic networks, allowing for a comprehensive mapping of the field's intellectual landscape. Findings This study adopts a systematic literature review combined with bibliometric analysis. Research limitations/implications This study is subject to limitations inherent to bibliometric and systematic review approaches. First, the analysis is based exclusively on the Scopus database, which may exclude relevant publications indexed elsewhere. Second, the findings rely on bibliometric indicators and thematic co-occurrence, which capture structural patterns but do not assess the substantive quality or causal impact of individual studies. Despite these limitations, the results provide a robust foundation for future research, particularly empirical and qualitative studies aimed at deepening the understanding of knowledge production and value creation in management consulting. Practical implications The findings offer practical insights for consultants, consulting firms, and organizational decision-makers. By identifying dominant themes and emerging research streams, the study helps practitioners understand how management consulting is evolving toward digital, knowledge-intensive, and sustainability-oriented practices. Consulting firms may use these insights to align capability development, talent profiles, and service portfolios with contemporary demands. Additionally, the results can inform professional training programs by highlighting the growing importance of digital competencies, interdisciplinary knowledge, and reflective practice in consulting work. Social implications From a social perspective, this study highlights the role of management consulting as a mechanism for knowledge diffusion and organizational learning within increasingly complex and digitalized societies. By supporting more informed decision making, consulting practices can contribute to organizational adaptability, responsible innovation and sustainable development. The growing emphasis on digital transformation and knowledge management also underscores the need for inclusive skill development and ethical awareness ensuring that consulting-driven transformations generate broader societal value beyond purely economic outcomes. Originality/value This study provides an integrative and up-to-date overview of the management consulting literature by combining a systematic review with bibliometric mapping techniques. By revealing the intellectual structure and thematic evolution of the field, this paper offers original insights into the scientific consolidation of management consulting. The findings contribute to both scholars and practitioners by clarifying dominant research streams, identifying underexplored areas, and highlighting opportunities for future research in an increasingly digital and knowledge-intensive consulting landscape.

Digital transformation and the future of human resources: emerging dimensions, implementation challenges and a strategic framework
    (Emerald Publishing Limited, 2026-07-01)
This paper examines how digital transformation (DT) is reshaping human resource (HR) management across organizations of diverse sizes and sectors. Grounded in resource-based view and dynamic capabilities theory, it addresses three research questions: what is the current state of research on DT in HR; what challenges organizations face when implementing digital technologies in this field; and what gaps remain in the academic literature requiring further exploration. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The search string was applied to Web of Science in April 2026, retrieving 418 publications spanning 2015–April 2026. Following a two-pass screening process and thematic analysis using Braun and Clarke (2006) six-step procedure, 60 empirically grounded studies were retained. Findings Thematic synthesis of the 60 retained studies reveals five dimensions through which DT is reshaping human resources: people analytics, AI for talent management, process automation, digitalization of learning and cultural transformation. Cultural transformation emerges as the foundational enabling condition across all dimensions. Critical challenges are identified as mutually reinforcing barriers: cultural resistance, digital skills gaps, ethical and governance concerns and structural constraints. Practical implications Ethical data governance frameworks must precede analytics deployment. AI should be adopted through an augmentation logic, enhancing rather than replacing human judgment, with bias, transparency and consent governance as non-negotiable prerequisites. Automation implementation should begin incrementally with low-complexity, high-volume processes. Digital learning must be treated as a strategic capability driver, integrated with real work processes and designed inclusively to avoid techno-overload. Critically, cultural readiness assessment and resistance measurement must begin before technology deployment, not after. Originality/value The study proposes two practitioner-oriented tools: a cultural framework for DT in HR, structured around five strategic nodes and a five-phase implementation roadmap, providing an evidence-based architecture for responsible, effective and sustainable HR DT applicable across diverse organizational contexts.

Analysis of the digital competencies of regional micro and small enterprises (MSEs)
    (Springer Nature, 2026-12-01)
Digital transformation is crucial for the sustainability and competitiveness of micro and small enterprises (MSEs). This study assessed the level of digital competencies of 119 regional MSEs using the DigComp 2.1 framework. Fifty-four percent of enterprises achieved an advanced level in digital communication and collaboration, and 47.9% in digital literacy. In contrast, only 25.2% achieved this level in content creation, and 24.4% in digital privacy and security. Ordinal regression analysis revealed that formal education (odds ratios OR = 11.6), digital communication and collaboration (OR = 4.7 × 105), and digital privacy and security (OR = 2.3 × 105) significantly increase the likelihood of advanced digital competencies. Although MSEs have made progress in integrating digital technologies, it is essential to strengthen training programs and support policies to close the identified gaps. The main limitation of this study is its non-probabilistic sampling in a single region, which restricts the generalization of the findings. Although the study focuses on a single region, the results provide a valuable and representative view of digital competencies. Future research should expand geographical coverage and use longitudinal designs to strengthen the generalization and analysis of the evolution of digital competencies over time.
