Item type:Publication, The Power of Words: Linguistic reflections on Shipibo-Konibo ethnography(Instituto Colombiano de Antropologia e Historia, 2024-01-01)Although studies of linguistic anthropology in the Amazon are increasingly abundant, scholars rarely reflect on the understanding of language from the perspective of Amerindian nations. This article proposes that it is possible to trace certain Amerindian conceptions of language through the interpretation of medicinal practices and some ancestral narratives. From the perspective of the Onanyabo (visionary doctors of the Shipibo-Konibo nation), the word can have a vibratory and realising power, capable of materialising the named, annulling the “metaphysical” distance between the signifier and the signified. In this way, it is possible to trace some principles to start thinking about a “Shipibo-Konibo ethnotheory of language”, which could be part of a more general conceptualisation of Amazonian and Amerindian linguistics. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Netebo: Contributions of Shipibo-Konibo Perspectivism to an Indigenous Philosophical Reflection(Universidad de los Lagos, 2023-01-01)The Shipibo-Konibo indigenous nation, settled mainly on the banks of the Ucayali River, is one of the most numerous in the Peruvian Amazon. This article proposes, based on the cosmogony of the ancient Meraya sages (visionary doctors of the Shipibo nation), a philosophical reflection on the possible ecological and ethical contributions of Shipibo perspectivism. The text argues that the notion of perspective (as understood by the Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro (2013)) has an equivalence in the Shipibo concept of Nete, which is usually translated into English as world. The ancestral conception, according to which there are many interrelated worlds, proposes an ethical and ecological requirement for human beings in which no one ethical perspective can be imposed abusively over others. The present philosophical reflections are based on extensive fieldwork, with ethnographic rigour, and on a sustained interpretative study of the oral narratives of the Shipibo-Konibo people. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Healing Some Doctors: The Medicinal Poetics of José María Arguedas(Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. Facultad de Letras y Ciencias Humanas, 2023-07-01)The present academic paper makes a medicinal interpretation, from a holistic, philosophical and indigenous understanding of health, of José María Arguedas’ famous poem “Llamado a algunos doctores” [Call to some doctors]. After reviewing some aspects of Arguedas’ literary and poetic proposal, the article will reflect on the political context and the philosophical mood (deeply Eurocentric) of the Andean literate elite that motivated the writing of this poem. Arguedas, from an empathetic identification with the indigenous sages, and in dialogue with the territories of the Peruvian highlands, invites the academic field to learn from this medicinal knowledge that has the power to reconnect intellectuals with their own heart and to reverse the modern distance that separates human beings from the territories. As will be seen towards the end of the paper, despite all the enlightened voices that predicted the disappearance of the native nations of the American continent, Arguedas’ proposal is still valid and points to the undeniable contribution that indigenous thought can make in the face of the civilization crisis of modernity. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
