Item type:Publication, An Effective Heuristic Method to Minimize Makespan and Flow Time in a Flow Shop Problem(Science and Information Organization, 2020-01-01)In this paper, it is presented a heuristic method for solving the multi-objective flow shop problem. The work carried out considers the simultaneous optimization of the makespan and the flow time; both objectives are essential in measuring the production system's performance since they aim to reduce the completion time of jobs, increase the efficiency of resources, and reduce waiting time in queue. The proposed method is an adaptation of multi-objective Newton's method, which is applied to problems with functions of continuous variables. In this adaptation, the method seeks to improve a sequence of jobs through local searches recursively. The computational experiments show the potential of the proposed method to solve medium-sized and large instances compared with other existing literature methods. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Co-creation and regional adaptation of a resilience-based universal whole-school program in five European regions(SAGE Publishing, 2020-09-03)The co-creation of educational services that promote youth resilience and mental health is still scarce. UPRIGHT (Universal Preventive Resilience Intervention Globally implemented in schools to improve and promote mental Health for Teenagers) is a research and intervention program in the Basque Country (Spain), Trentino (Italy), Low Silesia (Poland), Denmark and Reykjavik (Iceland). UPRIGHT implemented a co-creation research process whose results, outcomes and policy implications are presented here. The co-creation had a mixed-methods participatory research design with nine specific objectives linked to paired strategies of inquiry for adolescents, families, teachers and school staff. The overarching objective was to generate a valid and feasible regional adaptation strategy for UPRIGHT intervention model. Participants answered surveys ( n = 794) or attended 16 group sessions ( n = 217). The results integrate quantitative and qualitative information to propose a regional adaptation strategy that prioritizes resilience skills, adolescents’ concerns, and preferred methods for implementation across countries and in each school community. In conclusion, a whole-school resilience program must innovate, include and connect different actors, services and communities, and must incorporate new technologies and activities outside the classroom. A participatory co-creation process is an indispensable step to co-design locally relevant resilience interventions with the involvement of the whole-school community. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Universality of the Triangular Theory of Love: Adaptation and Psychometric Properties of the Triangular Love Scale in 25 Countries(Taylor & Francis, 2020-08-12)The Triangular Theory of Love (measured with Sternberg's Triangular Love Scale - STLS) is a prominent theoretical concept in empirical research on love. To expand the culturally homogeneous body of previous psychometric research regarding the STLS, we conducted a large-scale cross-cultural study with the use of this scale. In total, we examined more than 11,000 respondents, but as a result of applied exclusion criteria, the final analyses were based on a sample of 7332 participants from 25 countries (from all inhabited continents). We tested configural invariance, metric invariance, and scalar invariance, all of which confirmed the cultural universality of the theoretical construct of love analyzed in our study. We also observed that levels of love components differ depending on relationship duration, following the dynamics suggested in the Triangular Theory of Love. Supplementary files with all our data, including results on love intensity across different countries along with STLS versions adapted in a few dozen languages, will further enable more extensive research on the Triangular Theory of Love. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, RDMSim: an exemplar for evaluation and comparison of decision-making techniques for self-adaptation(Cornell University, 2021-05-05)Decision-making for self-adaptation approaches need to address different\nchallenges, including the quantification of the uncertainty of events that\ncannot be foreseen in advance and their effects, and dealing with conflicting\nobjectives that inherently involve multi-objective decision making (e.g.,\navoiding costs vs. providing reliable service). To enable researchers to\nevaluate and compare decision-making techniques for self-adaptation, we present\nthe RDMSim exemplar. RDMSim enables researchers to evaluate and compare\ntechniques for decision-making under environmental uncertainty that support\nself-adaptation. The focus of the exemplar is on the domain problem related to\nRemote Data Mirroring, which gives opportunity to face the challenges described\nabove. RDMSim provides probe and effector components for easy integration with\nexternal adaptation managers, which are associated with decision-making\ntechniques and based on the MAPE-K loop. Specifically, the paper presents (i)\nRDMSim, a simulator for real-world experimentation, (ii) a set of realistic\nsimulation scenarios that can be used for experimentation and comparison\npurposes, (iii) data for the sake of comparison.\n - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Quantification of the benefits derived from the nature-based solutions in the very arid and densified urban context of metropolitan Lima(University of São Paulo, 2022-11-21)Increasing the proportion of local vegetated surfaces within the highly densified context of Lima, Peru is considered a key local strategy of sustainable development. However, it may experience limitations as it could exacerbate water stress in the city. Therefore, quantifying the scale of benefits derived from local vegetated surfaces, mainly in terms of sensitivity to water use and urban temperature regulation, is necessary to optimize the management of water use for its preservation. The application of the international tool, Green Area Ratio at the local level, could contribute so that the increase in the proportion of vegetated surfaces in Lima considers a multifunctional sense to improve urban quality in different social, urban and environmental aspects. The results show that in order to be applied in the arid context of Lima, the tool would require adaptation, mainly of the scoring system, especially high values commonly assigned by foreign versions to some vegetated-based systems. This would make the version of the Green Area Ratio suggested for Lima in this study a novel and unique system, which demands further deeper research. However, it can be used as a preliminary framework based on scientific evidence, in case its official application is considered to support local sustainability guidelines and/or quality improvement plans for green areas. Its application could strengthen the implementation of multifunctional vegetable surfaces and nature-based solutions adapted to the aridity of the context. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Making rivers, producing futures: The rise of an eco-modern river imaginary in Dutch climate change adaptation(2024-01-11)In the field of climate change adaptation, the future matters. Amongst others, river futures justify the way adaptation projects materialize in rivers. In this paper, we challenge the ways in which dominant paradigms and expert claims monopolise the truth concerning policies and designs of river futures, side-lining and delegitimizing alternative river futures. Currently, limited work is done to critically reflect on the power of river futures in the context of climate change adaptation. We conceptualized the power of river futures through river imaginaries: collectively performed and publicly envisioned reproductions of riverine socionatures, mobilized through truth claims of social life and social order. Through the Border Meuse project case study, a climate change adaptation project in a stretch of the river Meuse in the south of the Netherlands and a proclaimed success story of climate adaptation in Dutch water management, we elucidated how three river imaginaries: a modern river imaginary, a market-driven imaginary and an eco-centric river imaginary, merged and materialized as an eco-modern river imaginary. Importantly, not only the river futures merged, also their aligned truth regimes merged. To this end, we argue that George Orwell’s famous quote “Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present, controls the past” can be extended to ‘Who controls the future, controls how we see and act in the present, and how we rediscover the past’. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Transformation of International Trade and Marketing: A Review of the Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Automation(World Scientific, 2026-02-01)This paper examines the current and future trends in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation in marketing and international trade. The main objective is understanding how these technologies transform these fields, identifying the predominant discussions, methodologies employed, and reported results since 2010. To this end, a rigorous and systematic scoping review was conducted using the Scopus and Google Scholar databases. A total of 35 studies published between 2010 and 2023 were selected following a multi-phase screening process based on thematic alignment, methodological rigor, and publication quality. Only peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings published in English were considered. Studies included had to explicitly address AI and automation in marketing or international trade, while descriptive reports or articles lacking analytical depth were excluded. The findings show a trend towards qualitative approaches in studies, emphasising theoretical and conceptual understanding over generating new data. Key themes identified include efficiency in cross-border e-commerce, user knowledge, adaptation to the era of big data and its effects on logistics, and regulatory challenges in the face of AI. These findings underscore the growing importance of AI and automation in marketing and international trade, highlighting opportunities and challenges for businesses and governments in a globalised environment.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The adaptive markets hypothesis through the lens of machine learning(Elsevier BV, 2026-01-01)The adaptive markets hypothesis (AMH) postulates that markets are not stationary environments permanently in equilibrium as the efficient market hypothesis (EMH) posits, but evolve over time. However, testing this requires tools that capture the inherent complexity of financial markets. Therefore, in this paper we introduce an approach that uses the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model to capture changes in the structure of the economic-financial environment. We apply the methodology to the U.S. equity market represented by the S&P500 for 40 years of daily data. With this tool we will demonstrate that, even with non-heuristic approaches such as the LSTM model, the learning and adaptation process after a change in the environment is slow, which is consistent with the AMH.
