Perceived value as a mediating variable in the theory of planned behavior: Application to the intention of completing a Master of Business Administration
    (EconJournals, 2020-07-10)
The objective of this research is to evaluate the intention to carry out an MBA in the Ecuadorian context through the model proposed by Azjen (1991); including the perceived value; as a mediating variable among the constructs (attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control) and intention. The research was framed in a quantitative perspective, with a cross section. The estimation of the model was made, through the multivariate statistical technique of structural equations, in order to evaluate the relationships between constructs. The analyzed population were undergraduate students from all the Universities of Ecuador, of which a sample of 756 students was surveyed. It was evident that all the hypothetical relationships established in the proposed model are significant with respect to the intention to carry out an MBA. The perceived value for completing an MBA influences the intention to complete an MBA by 0.894. Likewise, the perceived value was evaluated as a mediating variable, concluding in accordance with what was proposed by Ato and Vallejo (2011), which meets the different processes for verification. Finally, the correlations between attitude, subjective norms and control perception were reported to be significant. In addition, the R2 of the dependent variables was determined, hence, the intention to carry out an MBA reported 79.9%; Similarly, the perceived value was determined, obtaining 65.5%.Keywords: Theory of Planned Behavior (TCP); Perceived value; MBA graduate studies; Structural equations.JEL Classifications: M14, M20, M30DOI: 10.32479/irmm.9866

The Intention of Indebtedness with a Credit Card, an Application of the Theory of Planned Behaviour
(Mediterranean Center of Social and Educational Research, 2020-03-10)
The goal of this research is to study the factors that determine the intention of unsecured personal debt with credit cards using the Ajzen Planned Behavior Theory model (1991). Using the data of 450 Ecuadorian professionals and a model of structural equations estimated by partial least squares, the attitudes, subjective norms and perceived control that guide people towards the intention of this debt were identified. The importance of this study is its contribution to understanding the factors that determine the intention of personal indebtedness in emerging economies, expanding the study population to the professional sector. The transversal study has a quantitative design and its purpose is explanatory correlative. The hypothesis evidence and the results show that the Ajzen Planned Behavior Theory model (1991) is a predictive model of the intention to borrow by credit card in Ecuadorian professionals. The proposed model contributes with new individual and contextual factors that demonstrate the particular importance of knowledge of credit cards (CONTC), lifestyle (ESTV) and past behaviour (CPAS) in predicting the intention of debt (INTEND). Furthermore, due to the cultural characteristics of each region of Ecuador, the results are compared between the cities: Guayaquil (Costa) and Quito (Sierra).

Influence of indirect internal stakeholders on the performance of strategic projects: Understanding the behaviour of projects in universities in Bogotá
    (Inderscience Publishers, 2020-01-01)
The purpose of this paper is to discover the effect of the extent, engagement, and empowerment of indirect stakeholders on the performance of internal strategic projects through the moderating effect of complexity. This research was conducted in the City of Bogotá in public and private universities from a sample of 356 respondents. The system of statistical analysis used to test the hypothesis of the research was structural equation modelling (SEM). The proposed model has an endogenous latent variable called performance of internal strategic project, and three exogenous variables called stakeholder extent, stakeholder engagement, stakeholder empowerment, and as moderating variable, project complexity. The findings carry theoretical implications for these bodies of knowledge in management: project management and strategic management. Stakeholder extent has a significant effect on performance of internal strategic projects. Stakeholder engagement does not have a significant effect on performance of internal strategic projects. Stakeholder empowerment has a significant effect on performance of internal strategic projects. Complexity is the moderating variable between stakeholder extent and stakeholder engagement on performance of internal strategic projects. This paper's originality is manifest in the variables used, and in its depth of analysis of a gap found in the literature related to indirect stakeholders.

Emotional competencies and entrepreneurial intention: an extension of the theory of planned behavior case of Ecuador
    (Cogent OA, 2021-01-01)
This study analyzes the relationship between emotional competencies and entrepreneurial intention of students from public higher education institutions in Ecuador, supported by an extended model of Ajzen’s Theory of planned behavior. The results are derived from a questionnaire applied to students of last semester of careers with academic business training. To analyze the results, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used. The findings show that emotional competencies are significant factors in the configuration of entrepreneurial intentions and have a direct and positive relationship with the cognitive antecedents of entrepreneurial attitude and self-efficacy. It is suggested that students with a higher degree of emotional competencies cope in a better way with the cognitive bias that can make it difficult to recognize business opportunities. The main contribution of this study was to give generality to the results that have been obtained in the use of emotional competencies to promote the intentionality of entrepreneurship in the context of emerging economies.

Expert decision-making: a Markovian approach to studying the agency problem
    (Elsevier, 2021-12-01)
In this paper, we study the agency problem in an organisation within a Markovian framework. More specifically, the paper presents the case of a principal imposing an incentive-control structure upon an agent to force him to follow the principal's interests for which he was hired, against the tendency of the agent to follow his own interests. Findings point toward the principal's difficulty in controlling the behaviour of the agent through incentives and monitoring; instead, best results are obtained when hiring agents who care for their reputation and refrain from unprofessional behaviours. The implication is that if we consider that it might be difficult to identify this characteristic at the time of the agent's hiring, the best criterion will be to look for low levels of greed in the agent. This conclusion goes in some way against current practices of looking for aggressive agents for the generation of higher profits. Nevertheless, it should be noted that these potential benefits might actually fade away if the agent follows his own interests, instead of the principal's. Another interesting result points to the restricted, although necessary, role of monitoring to control the agent's behaviour, a result that goes against current research interests on measures of corporate governance. The paper is a contribution to expert decision-making.

Relationship between cash holdings and expected equity returns: evidence from Pacific alliance countries
    (Emerald, 2021-01-01)
This paper aims to examine the relationship between cash holdings (CH) and expected equity return in a sample of firms of Pacific alliance countries. Design/methodology/approach: This paper constructed a panel of Pacific alliance firms for the period ranging from 2010 to 2016. This paper estimated different specification models using multivariate regression, and the statistical technique used to validate the hypothesis was panel data. Findings: Results showed that there is a positive relationship between CH and expected equity return (r). The relationship between CH and systematic risk (ß) was estimated and this paper found a positive and statistically significant association. Findings suggest that corporate liquidity contains underlying information that contributes to explain the expected equity return, which, if ignored, can produce quite misleading results. Originality/value: The results of this study have both academic and practical implications. First, the findings of the research contribute to a better understanding of the asset pricing models in emerging countries. On the other hand, the results obtained in this study can serve shareholders to make better estimations of the expected equity return, so investors can improve the risk-return trade-off due to the model allow a better estimation of the risk-return relation.

Psychological empowerment and job stress in higher education institutions in Ecuador
    (Dove Medical Press Ltd, 2022-01-01)
Both psychological empowerment and job stress have been the subjects of great concern, studied mainly in developed countries. In emerging economies, few studies have contributed to the knowledge of the relationship between these two constructs. This study analyzed the relationship between the dimensions of psychological empowerment and job stress in tenured professors from public higher education institutions in Ecuador during 2019, providing insights for achieving better results regarding the productivity and well-being of teachers. This research seeks to bridge the knowledge gap concerning psychological empowerment and job stress within an academic context in an emerging economy. Methods: In this quantitative study, a confirmatory model was proposed. Correlation analysis was used to investigate whether psychological empowerment dimensions are related to job stress. Data were collected from a sample of 200 tenured professors working at public universities located in Zone 3 of Ecuador in 2019. The instrument applied for psychological empowerment was proposed by Spreitzer, composed of four dimensions—meaning, competence, impact, and autonomy. For job stress, the Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R) instrument applied was proposed and revised by Osipow. Results: Through structural equation modeling with partial least squares, it was possible to demonstrate that psychological empowerment reduces levels of job stress only when it is perceived that there is autonomy, fewer limitations, and more freedom. No evidence was identified that other components of psychological empowerment, such as meaning, competence, and impact, are related to job stress. Conclusion: The results indicated that the model used to explain the relationship between these variables had weak predictive power. Furthermore, only one research hypothesis is accepted. Finally, these findings are corroborated and explained by the different perspectives presented by various authors.

Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurial Orientation: The Mediating Effect of the Transactive Memory System
    (Routledge, 2023-01-01)
The constant dynamism of the market forces companies to prepare and acquire knowledge and manage it properly, which in turn will allow them to achieve higher levels of modernity, stability, and solvency, thus improving their chances of survival. In this research paper, we aim to investigate the relationship between Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurial Orientation in light of the mediating role played by the Transactive Memory System. The Transactive Memory System is a variable that has been very little studied and understood, but which requires greater attention because it constitutes a common knowledge platform that is encoded, stored, retrieved, and exchanged among the members of the organisation to obtain specialised knowledge in the performance of tasks. To this aim, we use structural equation modelling and further analyse the mediation effect with alternative tests in a sample of 206 manufacturing MSMEs in Ecuador. Among others, the results indicate that the Transactive Memory System exerts a total mediation role between Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurial Orientation. Theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed.

Decline of Interest Rates under Inflation Targeting and Previous Regimes: Evidence from Latin America and Developed Countries
    (Vilnius University, 2025-01-01)
This study empirically investigates the impact of Inflation Targeting (IT) on nominal interest rates over the past 40 years, focusing on 10 advanced and emerging economies. By using a Binary Regime Model embedded within a Backward-Looking Taylor, our findings confirm that IT adoption has significantly contributed to reducing interest rates, with the strongest effects observed in Latin American countries. To reinforce these results, we incorporate Smooth Transition Regression (STR) models, with and without instrumental variables, allowing for a more suitable representation of gradual policy transitions. The STR estimates consistently support our main findings, validating the robustness of the observed impacts. Furthermore, we show that, both before and after IT implementation, central banks display a stronger emphasis on responding to inflation than to the output gap, with this focus intensifying under IT regimes.
