Business ethics crisis and social sustainability. The case of the product "Pura Vida" in Peru
    (MDPI, 2020-04-01)
Peru is a Latin American country with one of the most powerful and dynamic emerging economies in the world; however, it reveals considerable inconsistencies and socioeconomic inequalities. This research demonstrates that business ethics and corporate social responsibility are closely related with the welfare state of the country/region where a company is incorporated. Research work has been carried out on the case of the product "Pura Vida", of the Gloria Company, implementing a mixed research method (documentary, quan and qual) in which a descriptive collection of data from different sources, in relation to the company and the crisis with Pura Vida milk, has been used; additionally, an ad hoc survey has been conducted on a sample of Peruvian citizens to know their insight in relation to the relevant aspects of business ethics and corporate responsibility and their opinion regarding the specific case being investigated; finally, in-depth interviews were held with the company's management staff. It is shown that without a certain degree of welfare state, it is difficult to implement ethics and social responsibility in companies and in society as a whole. In addition, the main concerns of Peruvians regarding ethics and social responsibility can be observed.

Academic performance of micro-entrepreneurs in business training programs: evidence from the application of an i4.0 educational system during the COVID-19 pandemic
    (Belgrade University, 2021-01-01)
There is limited information on the academic performance obtained by teaching through an i4.0 educational system. Therefore, this article aims to close the gap by presenting the existing literature and the quantitative results obtained from the evaluations and surveys made to micro-entrepreneurs with little knowledge of digital technologies, and in many cases with different levels of education, who have been trained during the COVID-19 pandemic, between August and December 2020. The business training program used an i4.0 educational system based on IoT, the cloud, social networks and Web services. The results showed that the participants achieved a satisfactory academic performance and met the objectives of the training program in business-related topics. Likewise, the results established that the academic performance of the student in a business training program through an i4.0 system is not directly related to the student's previous educational level.

Latin American female academic perceptions about the COVID pandemic’s impact on gender equity and within-country inequality
    (Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2022-05-09)
The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has brought us a serious economic, health and social problem worldwide crisis. In this context, there has been an increase in inequality between men and women throughout the world. In this situation of home confinement, uncertainty, stress and fear, women have been the most affected, regardless of their education level. The purpose of this study is to know the impact on the perception of academic women who suffered from a lack of gender equality (sustainable development) during the pandemic (SDG 5) and, therefore, the increase in the gender inequality gap (SDG 10) in Latin America (LA). Design/methodology/approach: This qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study has a nonexperimental field and cross-sectional design that uses the field technique of focus groups. Findings: This study revealed the deepest feelings of women researchers on this issue, leading to a deep reflection on the need to build the basis to transform unequal gender relations and introduce the gender perspective in a cross-sectional manner in a university context. Originality/value: This study, analyzed from a gender perspective, aimed to unravel the complexity in which the majority of LA women academics live and to explain the gaps and differences in their lives caused by the inequalities that have increased due to the pandemic in Latin American societies.

Business school model of social responsibility and sustainability and its impact on small- and mid-sized enterprises
    (Emerald Publishing Limited, 2022-03-28)
Purpose This study aims to define a business school model of social responsibility (SR) and sustainability and describe how the implementation of this model impacts on small- and mid-sized enterprises (SME) and stakeholders in the chain. Design/methodology/approach The model was built based on a conceptual analysis about the literary and documentary review in recognized databases of scientific publications and models of SR, accreditations and impact and quality report systems of business schools. The implementation of the model was based on a project that involved Peruvian SME. Data were collected through surveys administered to the study population. The results were confirmed through in-depth interviews. Analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive-analytical methods were used to present the SR model. Findings This model focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), partnerships and solved relevant social and economic problems. It also allowed the growth of the micro entrepreneur, the family, the company, the society and other stakeholders in the chain. Research limitations/implications The model was validated in one business school but generated more results than the expected. It is recommended to replicate it in other organizations. It has been developed in pandemic and post-pandemic situations. Practical implications The model was based on many impact models that considered the SDGs and relevant alliance generation that involved stakeholders in the chain. It also contributed to the development of entrepreneurs and the society. Social implications The model benefited people, society and companies. The program aimed to train and formalize entrepreneurs and generate social and economic development. Originality/value This study allowed moving from theory to practice in topics of SR and sustainability. The main original aspect is that the model was based on the Unión de Responsabilidad Social Universitaria Latino Americana model; the Business Graduates Association, European Quality Improvement System, Business school Impact System, Global Reporting Initiative standards, the Responsible Business Conduct and the SDGs.

    (Emerald Publishing, 2024-07-30)
This study aims to understand the leadership characteristics of founders of social and environmental enterprises in Latin America who have achieved business success with a focus on sustainability despite difficult social, economic, political and even health contexts in which they live. Design/methodology/approach: This nonexperimental research is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study. Twenty-one in-depth interviews were conducted with social/environmental entrepreneurs of the Kunan Network (an organization that groups the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Peru). Findings: The study analyzes the leadership profile and characteristics of entrepreneurs who have created profitable businesses with a social/environmental focus that solve relevant social problems and contribute to improving people’s quality of life and caring for the environment. Research limitations/implications: Although only 21 business leaders with outstanding participation and positive social and environmental impact were included in this study, they were supported and recognized by the Kunan Network. Originality/value: The study contributed to the conceptualization and understanding of the profile of leaders of social and environmental enterprises, whose main challenges are to solve social or environmental problems of society and contribute to improving the quality of life of people and the environment. Knowing the profile of these entrepreneurs generates value to the knowledge of the subject and contributes to understand and propose strategies to improve the ecosystem of social-environmental entrepreneurship in emerging countries such as Peru. This will contribute to the creation of relationships and alliances with various social actors: public, private, third sector, academia, among others, for the management and promotion of sustainable business.

The Evolution of the Service-Learning Methodology as a University Social Responsibility Strategy That Generates Shared Value: A Latin American Experience
    (Emerald Publishing Limited, 2023-10-11)
Purpose The study analyzed how the service-learning (SL) methodology can become a university social responsibility (USR) strategy that generates shared value for the university and its stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach This qualitative and exploratory–descriptive research had a nonexperimental field and cross-sectional design that used field techniques such as focus groups and in-depth interviews with the participants of the USR program “MIPyME vs COVID-19” in two Latin American countries. Findings This study revealed the perceptions of students who participated in the USR program on how a virtual service-learning (vSL) strategy related to the use of technology generates a positive impact on the development of shared learning between students and micro-entrepreneurs from a global and Latin American perspective, as well as for the internationalization of their study plans. Research limitations/implications The field study was conducted in only two Latin American countries; however, the USR program has been implemented in eight universities from eight Latin American countries with very similar social, political and health contexts. Originality/value It is one of the first studies on SL used in a strategic and articulated way in universities with a USR approach. It analyzed traditional evaluations of this methodology, incorporating others such as virtuality (produced by the effects of the COVID-19), which led the authors to generate methodological innovations based on new ways of connecting, linking and generating shared learning and value for all.

Leadership, Communication, and Job Satisfaction for Employee Engagement and Sustainability of Family Businesses in Latin America
    (MDPI, 2023-06-01)
This research focuses on the determinants of employee engagement in family businesses in Peru. The study is based on previous research that showed the importance of organisational culture, leadership, and human resource management practices to achieve effective business performance. The methodological strategy was to conduct a qualitative, quantitative, and documentary analysis research. The study found that participatory and authentic leadership styles, effective communication, and job satisfaction were key factors to retain talent in two family businesses and small to medium-sized enterprises in Peru. These factors can enhance employee engagement, which is critical for the success of family businesses. The results suggest that Peruvian family businesses can improve their sustainability and contribute positively to the economic growth of the country by utilising different measures. They can prioritise leadership, communication, and job satisfaction; offer opportunities for employee development and growth; provide competitive compensation packages; and create a positive work environment. The findings have implications for family businesses in emerging markets as well as for businesses operating in consolidated markets.

Knowledge Transfer in Peru Microentrepreneurs: The Effects on Personal and Business Improvement
    (Emerald Publishing Limited, 2023-10-18)
Purpose This study aims to analyze the effects of microentrepreneurs’ knowledge transfer (KT) on personal improvement (PI) and business improvement (BI). Design/methodology/approach The study was developed in two stages: a literature review based on KT and the learning process in microenterprises to have managerial competence and PI and BI to acquire the managerial competence that entrepreneurs need. The second stage was constructing a structural model based on 107 questionnaires and bootstrapping of 5,000 replications of microentrepreneurs who went through a training program (quantitative) and a focus group (qualitative). This study had a mixed approach, exploratory scope and experimental design. Findings The research showed real evidence about the performance level of microentrepreneurs when they passed through the process of KT and its impact on PI and BI. This research considers their managerial competencies, and the findings show a relationship between the theory of individual and organizational learning. Research limitations/implications This study considered Peruvian microentrepreneurs who participated in a virtual training program that included several courses related to their current environments and topics of interest. The analyzed period covered the years affected by COVID-19. Practical implications The model reveals that KT is relevant to PI and BI. Performance was measured regarding growth, income, innovation, productivity and responsibility before and after the program. Social implications This research analyzed the need for training microentrepreneurs for personal and private reasons under a COVID-19 scenario to foster their businesses and assume financial responsibilities. This study considered Peru’s reality, a country in which 94.9% of companies are microenterprises. The study revealed that microentrepreneurs improved their personal and professional lives and addressed relevant social problems that affect their environments because of the KT effects. Originality/value This study bridges the gap in the literature on how the theory of KT can be applied to entrepreneurs. This study revealed significant findings in terms of PI and BIs. The impact of KT indicates the relevance of managerial competencies related to the performance level obtained in terms of growth, income, innovation, productivity and responsibility.
