Item type:Publication, Continuity and change in the cult of the dead: Shaping kin formation in the Peruvian Andes (A.D. 1000–1600)(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2024-01-01)This paper presents the results of archaeological investigations within funerary contexts at the site of Marcajirca (a.d. 1000–1600) in the north-central highlands of Peru. The results suggest the existence of various population groups, or ayllu members, that were buried at this site. Two contemporary types of tombs are predominant, funerary caves and chullpas, along with two belowground tombs, which are atypical in the region. Bioarchaeological analyses indicate that all the tombs were collective and that the remains were manipulated over time. The evidence from Marcajirca points to important changes in funerary patterns with respect to the previous period, including tombs being incorporated into residential places and, later in time, tombs as created, extra, private spaces by enclosing the chullpas within patios where rituals such as burning of offerings were practiced. The results are discussed within the context of the cult of the dead and the formation of ayllus. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Contextos estratigráficos de la cerámica recuay: una perspectiva desde Huamparán, sierra oriental de Áncash(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2025-12-05)This case report correlates the types of ceramic wares and the stratigraphy of the Recuay site of Huamparán in the Callejón de Conchucos, Ancash. It was concluded that the various ceramic types were not in sequential but coetaneous use throughout the three phases of occupation (200 B.C.-A.D. 900). The predominance of ceramic types with shashal all throughout the Recuay sequence suggests that sociopolitical changes did not alter the manufacture of ceramics using this material, which endured throughout all of the Late Intermediate Period. Some types likewise suggest non-local manufacture and interrelations with other groups, both coastal and from the northern highlands.Scopus© Citations 1 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
This report presents the results of the research undertaken at Huamparán, a site in the Conchucos Region associated with the Recuay culture. Two uncommon ceramic vessels found during excavations are herein described and their origin is discussed. These objects are the first evidence of the interaction between the North Coast (possibly the Gallinazo or the Moche) and the eastern highlands of Ancash at the beginning of the Middle Horizon (c. 500-700 A.D.). Although the nature of these interactions has yet to be established, we posit that in this region the Recuay took part in long-distance exchanges without any influence of the Wari State.4 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Cult of the Dead and funerary Architecture: A multidisciplinary approach from Marcajirca site in the north highlands of Peru AD 1000-1500(Universidad Catolica del Norte, 2025-01-01)The cult of the dead is reflected in a diversity of rituals and types of tombs. Chullpas, funerary caves, underground burials and shelters tombs are present in Marcajirca. This diversity reflects the presence of diverse groups inhabiting the Puccha basin and the Huaritambo valley in the Ancash highlands. However, the cult of the dead is not static; it undergoes a series of modifications, probably due to competition from various ayllus that are being buried at the Marcajirca site. This study brings together the results of archaeological excavations, analysis of cultural material, human remains, radiometric dating and isotopes. The results indicate that Marcajirca functioned as a regional cemetery, where the tombs were used by multiple generations; social differentiation was minimal; food burning was permormed as part of offering rituals; and the sacred mountain Llamoq played an important and influential role in the cult of the dead.3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Ceramic production and exchange in the Chavín heartland: an archaeometric study from Canchas Uckro (1100 − 800 BCE), Ancash, Peru(Springer Nature, 2025-12-01)Canchas Uckro is one of several settlements surrounding the ceremonial and urban center of Chavín de Huántar (c. 1100 − 400 BCE). In this paper, we explore the relationship between these two sites through an archaeometric study of pottery production at Canchas Uckro (c. 1100 − 800 BCE). Specifically, we combine thin-section petrography and portable X-ray fluorescence to characterize technological style based on a sample of 56 sherds. Our analyses identified 12 distinct petro-groups, with most of the pottery (85% of the assemblage) reflecting two local technological styles. A small percentage of ceramic fine wares representing both geochemical and technological outliers (2–4%) point to probable interregional exchange, while a larger group of undecorated ceramics (~ 10%) suggests more frequent intraregional interactions. Altogether, our findings demonstrate that Canchas Uckro's ceramic production was independent of Chavín de Huántar, with its inhabitants participating in distinct social and economic networks.6 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
